Hostgator Sucks

I found hostgator after leaving another hosting company that was stopping their service. Oh, well... It was free and the people running it were awesome! But free doesn't pay the bills, but they gave everyone more than enough warning and time to back up and migrate their sites off of it.

I first got to hostgator sometime in 2008 and everything was great. I didn't have any problems until 2010 and that was my own fault. I had misconfigured something and it killed my site. The tech was so helpful and fixed the problem for me by fixing the file permissions. All of them... Every folder. No fuss about it. I was in love with Hostgator from that moment until the end of our relationship. In 2012 or so they installed PHPSuxit (I mean PHPSuexec). Things started to very quickly go downhill at that moment. Suddenly my .htacesss files were in disarray. The tech person was clueless and just put in tons of symlinks to my files and folders. My whole organized and orderly system was completely destroyed. But my sites and my clients sites still worked so I was still mildly happy, but falling out of love...

Now, I come to the part where everything falls apart. Hostgator was sold and for a small amount of time (a few days) everything was fine. We were told there was going to be server migrations, but they wouldn't affect us. They were wrong. Everyone's servers, sites, and accounts went dark for more than 12 hours. It was during this time that many of us lost clients, couldn't give ETA's on when sites would come back online, and didn't have any information. Because of this a lot of us were made to look like terrible providers. Sites that were running perfectly for years suddenly had major issues. Many of us worked day and night to fix things, but to no avail.

It was then I decided to migrate away from Hostgator as fast as I could. I found a couple hosts that looked promising only to find out they were owned by the same people who now owned Hostgator... EIG. This is a company who's hosts are to be avoided at all costs! They are the absolute worst. They buy up wonderful companies like Hostgator and put them on packed servers, resell servers so hard that sites become so slow you'd swear you were using dial up.
